Support for further and higher education students

Many people often struggle throughout their school life not realising that they may in fact have a specific learning difficulty such as Dyslexia.  An assessment for Dyslexia can often be the key to unlock a better understanding of an individual’s strengths and weaknesses.

Diagnostic assessment

A diagnostic assessment will identify the difficulties that are causing concern.  The report not only highlights the areas of learning which the individual finds difficult but identifies their strengths too.  This will help the FE and HE institutes to support the individual’s learning more effectively.  Furthermore, the assessment will provide practical advice on effective study skills.

If an individual is found to have dyslexia they may be eligible for access arrangements and may also qualify for Disabled Students’ allowance.  As a specialist assessor who holds an Assessment Practising Certificate, the report provided can be used to support this application.

Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA)

Allocation of Disabled Students’ Allowance is at the discretion of Student Finance England. This allowance may provide finance for the purchase of assistive technology and/or for support from a dyslexia expert who could work regularly to support you.

The DfIU&S provides a useful booklet on information about Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSAs) for both current and prospective full-time and part-time students in Higher Education.

DSAs can be paid by Student Finance England to students who can show that they have a disability or medical condition that affects their ability to study.  The leaflet explains how to apply, what costs DSAs can help with, and who can help with the application.  It is intended for students and prospective students whose homes are in England and Wales.

The DfIU&S booklet Extra Help – Disabled Students Allowances 2017-18 is available from Student Finance England – on 0800 731 9133.  It is also available on the following website: https://www4.ntu.ac.uk/student_services/document_uploads/193289.pdf
